IDG Desired State Configuration Maintaining configuration on lots of servers has been a thorn in the side of system administrators for as long as anyone has been running lots of servers. Many point solutions and countless custom in-house tools have been devised to accomplish the task. Now there is a feature built into Windows Server R2 that makes it possible to programmatically establish a baseline of roles and features, then monitor and update any system that doesn't match the desired state.
Desired State Configuration requires PowerShell 4. In essence, Storage Tiering is the ability to dynamically move chunks of stored data between different classes of storage, such as fast SSDs and slower hard drives. Many high-end storage systems have had automated tiering for years, but this is the first time you are able to do it at the operating system level. Microsoft uses a heat-map algorithm to determine which chunks of data are seeing the most activity and automatically moves the "hottest" chunks to the fastest tier.
You can adjust the settings for how and when the data is moved using PowerShell. Pinning makes it possible to ensure that files you always want on the fastest storage, such as boot disks in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure deployment, will never be moved to the slower storage tier. Otherwise, files that you always want to take advantage of SSDs might be moved to the HDD tier after some period of relative inactivity.
This can be seen in a typical database scenario where a large volume of disk writes may exceed the ability of the drive controller and disks to keep up. The cache would eliminate any pauses caused by an overwhelmed storage subsystem. That said, this new capability could greatly increase the overall effectiveness of deduplication for VDI implementations. When a user alters a file even in the middle , DFSR can efficiently see which signatures changed and then send along the matching data blocks. With them, DFSR can use other similar files that the server already has to build a copy of a new file locally.
DFSR can use up to five of these similar files. This staging folder contains the marshalled files sent between servers, and allows replication without risk of interruption from subsequent handles to the file. By default, files over KB stage during replication, unless RDC is enabled and using its default minimum file size, in which case files over 64KB are staged.
When replicating on low-latency, high-bandwidth networks like LANS and high-end WANs, it may be faster to allow certain files to replicate without first staging.
Installation options[ edit ] Unlike its predecessor, Windows Server can switch between " Server Core " and "Server with a GUI " installation options without a full reinstallation.
Server Core — an option with a command-line interface only — is now the recommended configuration. There is also a third installation option that allows some GUI elements such as MMC and Server Manager to run, but without the normal desktop, shell or default programs like File Explorer.
In the new Processes tab, the processes are displayed in varying shades of yellow, with darker shades representing heavier resource use. Unlike the Windows 8 version of Task Manager which looks similar , the "Disk" activity graph is not enabled by default.
The CPU tab no longer displays individual graphs for every logical processor on the system by default, although that remains an option. Additionally, it can display data for each non-uniform memory access NUMA node. When displaying data for each logical processor for machines with more than 64 logical processors, the CPU tab now displays simple utilization percentages on heat-mapping tiles. Hovering the cursor over any logical processor's data now shows the NUMA node of that processor and its ID, if applicable.
Additionally, a new Startup tab has been added that lists startup applications,  however this tab does not exist in Windows Server Both IPv4 and IPv6 are fully supported. Upgrades of the domain functional level to Windows Server are simplified; it can be performed entirely in Server Manager.

Major new features of ReFS include: Metadata and file data are organized into tables similar to a relational database. The file size, number of files in a folder , total volume size and number of folders in a volume are limited by bit numbers; as a result ReFS supports a maximum file size of 16 exabytes , a maximum of Free space is counted by a hierarchical allocator which includes three separate tables for large, medium, and small chunks.
File names and file paths are each limited to a 32 KB Unicode text string. Built-in resilience ReFS employs an allocation-on-write update strategy for metadata,  which allocates new chunks for every update transaction and uses large IO batches. All ReFS metadata has built-in bit checksums which are stored independently.
The file data can have an optional checksum in a separate "integrity stream ", in which case the file update strategy also implements allocation-on-write; this is controlled by a new "integrity" attribute applicable to both files and directories.
If nevertheless file data or metadata becomes corrupt, the file can be deleted without taking the whole volume offline. ReFS seamlessly  integrates with Storage Spaces , a storage virtualization layer that allows data mirroring and striping, as well as sharing storage pools between machines. In Windows Server , automated error-correction with integrity streams is only supported on mirrored spaces; automatic recovery on parity spaces was added in Windows 8.
